Things To Know

Welcome to our newest Members, Wen and Malcolm Bash. In our 70-year history, Wen and Mal are only the second husband/wife members in the Club, but they are the first husband/wife members to be inducted at the same time. Congratulations and Welcome!

As most of you know, Lion Tom Gambino has been diagnosed with a fast spreading form of cancer. A call went out to the Town asking for volunteers to help out at the Gambino homestead, after Tom was rushed to the hospital, and we are proud to report that a good number of Lions and Lionesses (as well as other Townspeople) were on hand to help with the demolition and reconstruction of the Gambino kitchen. This, of course, includes those folks who couldn’t swing a hammer but made a mean pot roast, delicious sandwiches, or some other dish to feed the working volunteers.

The State Convention will be held at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Cherry Hill, NJ on May 16 through 18, 2002. There will be expanded Hospitality Room Services and a Pin Trading Event. We need to send at least 7 delegates to the convention, but would like to send an additional seven alternates. All Members wishing to attend the State Convention should see Lion Andy Jost.

The five Lions signs you see as you enter Town, were beginning to look a “worn”, and the Board voted to rehab the signs. The structures (posts and cross members ) were sanded or replaced as needed, then stained. All new signage was installed.   We’d like to thank Lion Mike Kaiser and his Sign Crew for doing such a great job, and completing it, as planned, in one day.

The tree for the Cranbury Lions sponsored Todd Beamer Memorial has been planted in Heritage Park. It is a magnificent Red Oak, located just to the left, beyond the parking area at the Main Street entrance. The stone marker has been donated and will be installed in the near future. Dedication of the Memorial is planned to be on September 14, 2002.

Memorial Day is just around the corner, and our Parade Committees (Bob Wood, Parade Chair and Doug Pearce and Richard Stannard, Float Co-Chairs) are in full swing to make this event the success it has always been. We will have a Super 50/50 this year, as always. Last year we sold over 800 tickets; this year we are hoping to break that record and have a goal of 1000 tickets sold.  Everyone will be getting their tickets in the mail. Due to its importance as a fundraiser, we ask that each member sell as many tickets as you possibly can. After you sell all your tickets, don’t be shy…Lion George Smith will be able to give you a few more to sell.

Lion Walt Caldwell has begun planning for the 4th Annual Cranbury Lions Golf Classic. It will be held at the Cranbury Golf Course on Monday, June 3, 2002.   The 4-man Scramble Format will cost $125 per player. Additional information will be out shortly. Walt will be in need of volunteers to help with the Golf Outing; if you can provide assistance in selling Hole Sponsors, getting golfers, or obtaining prize donations, please contact Walt.

This year’s Trenton Thunder 50/50 is Thursday, June 6. A sign-up sheet is going around at the meetings for volunteers (or contact Lion Bob Virgadamo). As in the past, we need a minimum of six (6) volunteers. Each ticket seller will get free entrance into the Park, and the Club will pick up the cost of a hot dog and a beverage. Ticket sellers do not have to be Lions, but must be over 18. Volunteers need to be at the Park between 5:30 and 6PM on Game Day. It may be of some interest to know that there will be fireworks following this game.

This year’s Installation Dinner Dance will be held on Friday, June 14, 2002 at Good Time Charlie’s, in Kingston. Anyone wishing to attend should sign the reservation sheet going around at the meeting, or contact Chairperson Charley Devany.

The Cranbury Lions Second Annual Picnic will be held this year at the Cranbury Pool on Saturday, July 27, 2002, beginning at 5:00PM. Details will be available shortly. You can reserve a spot through the Picnic Chairperson, Lion Joe Carroll.

The Cranbury Lions will sponsor our Third Annual Trenton Thunder Game at Riverside Stadium. As always, the entire Town is invited. We have blocked 100 tickets, and can get additional, if we sell out early. The tickets are @$8. The difference from past years is that this year we are only doing seats, rather than the more expensive picnic area. The game date is Saturday, August 10th. It’s not too early to reserve your tickets today!

Reminders

There are still many of you who have e-mail capability, but are still receiving The Jargon via regular mail. Please notify the Editor of your e-mail address by phone or via e-mail at BobV@cranbury.org. Your e-mail address will not be distributed outside of the Club, and will only be used for The Jargon and other necessary Club business. Your participation in this program benefits all of us. Thank you.

The Cranbury Lions Club Directory of Members has been placed on a secured page on the website, and can be printed directly from the site when needed. All members have been given the appropriate passwords to gain access. If you have forgotten the logon and/or password, or if you were not at the meeting where the security codes were given, please contact our Information and Technology Chair, Lion Dave Shaffer, at daves@cranbury.org, and request the access information.

Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Bob Virgadamo to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members may be notified.

Let’s help our Program Chair, Frank Marlowe. We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis; when you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call.

Advertising has become a major fundraiser, and fundraising is everyone’s responsibility. Please provide a helping hand by directing all advertising leads to Lion Gene Buckley on-line at genebuck@hotmail.com
