The Cranbury Lions Board of Directors has voted unanimously to provide Honorary Membership to four Cranbury Lions for their long and continued years of service. At the April 6 meeting, President Walt will present the Certificates to:

Lion Wayne Stahl – Inducted as a Cranbury Lion in June 1938; Treasurer (1952-53); Past President (1955-56);

Current Chairman of the Welfare Committee.

Lion John Bloom – Inducted as a Cranbury Lion in January 1955.

Lion Dick West – Inducted as a Cranbury Lion in January 1956; Club Secretary (1959-62); Past President

(1966-67); Former Club Historian.

Lion Craig Gilbert – Inducted as a Cranbury Lion in January 1962; Past President (1969-70)

The Nominations Committee has selected a Slate of Officers and Directors for the 2005-2006 Lion Year. The Slate was approved at the April Board of Directors meeting, and will be read at the next two regular meetings. While the Nominating Committee has attempted to select a “well-rounded” slate, write-in ballots may be added to the slate, as it is passed among the members at the regular meetings. President Walt will ask for a seconding from the membership on the Slate at the April 6^th meeting. A final vote will be taken at the May 4^th meeting. For your information, a copy of the Slate of Officers and Directors appears at the end of this month’s newsletter.

The Student Affairs Committee has advised that the cutoff for applications for the Doc Tudor and Todd Beamer Scholarships, the Stan Thomas Award, and the World Affairs Seminar is April 15^th. Any member who has a candidate – or knows of a candidate – for any of these awards should have the candidates apply by the deadline.

You may have noticed a slight change in the Jargon Banner – Michele Hart, who founded the website with Lion Nick Altieri, has resigned as webmaster due to her relocation from Cranbury. Lion Dave Shaffer, our Information and Technology Chair, will now assume these duties, and may be able to use some help from members who can write in html (is that right, Dave?); if you are computer savvy, please contact Lion Dave at DaveS@cranbury.org. Additionally, President Walt will be forming a committee of volunteers to actively pursue donations through advertising on the website – no computer skills are required. With over 300 local businesses, the website has the potential to raise between $7500 and $30,000 per year in revenue. All we need are the volunteers to make it happen. Any member who wishes to volunteer for this committee should contact President Walt.

The Cranbury Lions Barn Project is finally coming together. Project Chairman Lion Mike Kaiser has met with the Township, and negotiations are underway for the buildings to be placed into the Club’s care through a “long-term lease” situation, and these negotiations are expected to be concluded shortly. Barring any additional delays from the Township, Lion Mike expects that work on the project will begin shortly. More information will follow.

The Lion of the Year Dinner will be held on April 27, as a Joint Meeting with the other Clubs in our Zone: East Brunswick, Milltown, North Brunswick, South Brunswick and Spotswood/Monroe. This year, in addition to the Lion of the Year, we will be awarding three Melvin Jones Fellowships. As always, our Lion of the Year Dinner meeting is also our Spring Spouse Night meeting, and since one of these prestigious awards could go to you, all Cranbury Lions, and their spouses, are strongly urged to attend. The LOTY awards dinner will be held at the East Brunswick Chateau; menu choices are Roast Beef, Chicken Francaise, or Broiled Tilapia. The cost is $20 per person (additional charges will be billed with the quarterly dues statement). There will be a cash bar. A sign up sheet is being passed at the meetings, or you can call Lion Bob Virgadamo (395-7050) with your reservation and meal choices.

This year’s White Cane Days will be held on April 29 & 30. There has been a sign up sheet at the meetings for members to choose their date and time. All members are expected to collect for the White Cane, and a sheet with your assignment location and time will be distributed shortly. Any member who needs to switch a time or day, or may have a legitimate reason for not being able to participate should please contact either of the Committee Co-Chairs, Lions Mahlon Thompson or Andre Mento, or President Walt, as soon as the list is released.

Our Super 50/50 Spring Raffle tickets will be available this month, and all members will be receiving tickets in the mail. As one of our largest (and oldest) fundraisers, each member is asked to sell every ticket they receive, and make every possible effort to sell additional tickets. Volunteers will be needed, by the Raffle Committee, to sell tickets along Main Street during the Memorial Day Parade. A sign-up sheet will be circulating at the meetings during May.

Lion Doug Pearce, our Golf Committee Chair, has announced that Monday, May 16, 2005 marks the date of the Cranbury Lions 7^th Annual Golf Outing, at the Peddie Golf Course in Hightstown. The $125 per player, includes cart and greens fees, lunch and dinner, team and individual prizes for play, door prizes, auction items and a registration gift. The event starts with lunch at 11:30, followed by a 1PM Shotgun Start. The Golf Outing is limited to the first 100 golfers. As this is one of our biggest fundraisers, all members are encouraged to recruit as many Hole Sponsors, as possible; the hole sponsorships are $100 and $125, which, in addition to a sign on a hole, includes a business card ad or full page ad, respectively, in the program book. Spouses and non-golfing Lions may attend the dinner for $30; both lunch and dinner includes choice of beer or wine at the open bar. Beverages will be sold, at a nominal charge, from a cart on the course throughout the day…the cart driver will try not to get lost this year!

The Memorial Day Parade will be upon us soon, and as a reminder, the Parade Committee will need volunteers for the day. A sign up sheet will be available at the meetings shortly.

Thanks to the efforts of President Walt and Hightstown Lions President Paul Cousineau, our annual Cranbury/Hightstown Joint Meeting has been set for May 25, 2005, at the Masonic Lodge (downstairs) in Hightstown. Historically, we have alternated hosting duties, and this year it is the Hightstown’s turn to host us, so we are on their schedule (2^nd & 4^th Wednesday). As in the past, the joint meeting will use the interactive discussion format; at this time, the suggested topic will be, “How can our two Clubs be more communicative at both the Club and the District levels?” As the date approaches, a sign-up sheet will be circulated at our meeting. All Cranbury Lions are encouraged to attend.

Every year, District 16D volunteers to help with the eye program at the Special Olympics. This annual event will be held on June 3, 4, & 5, 2005 (Friday, Saturday, & Sunday) at the College of New Jersey in Ewing Township. [Note: the original days/dates we were given were incorrect] Set-up will take place on Friday; Saturday is the busy day for registration and check-ups, Sunday is the closing day. Refreshments will be provided by the local ShopRite supermarket. The Special Olympics allows physically/mentally challenged individuals to compete in a variety of athletic events. The ages of participants range from 8 to mid-forties. As part of the event, there is a health center that allows professionals to examine the athletes for a variety of health issues. Lions International and Special Olympics developed a program called Special Olympics/ Lions International Opening Eyes Program, where the athlete’s eyes are examined for a range of functions. Our part is to help set up (on Friday), give exams, register the Olympians, assist in helping select frames, take eye glass prescriptions to Lens Crafters for preparation, and ensure the Olympians receive the glasses. All Lions and non-Lions are invited to volunteer for a flexible number of hours or days for the event. If you can make the time to help in this worthwhile effort, please advise President Walt or Lions Tom Reilly or Bob Virgadamo; or use the sign-up sheet circulating at the meetings.

Mark you calendars for the two dates of our annual Trenton Thunder Baseball fundraiser and Club Outing:

While it may be a bit early for us to ask for volunteers for the Trenton Thunder 50/50 Fundraiser, we hope that many of you will consider coming to Riverside Stadium to help sell 50/50 tickets. The more ticket sellers we have, the more tickets we can sell; Cranbury Lions may bring anyone over 18 to sell tickets. Entry into the stadium is free; the Club provides each ticket seller with a hot dog and a beverage; and, while you raise money for the community, you get to watch a baseball game. We have been given a Friday night game (7:05) for this fundraiser, between the Thunder and the Reading Phillies, on June 24, 2005. This is a good “rivalry” game, and with enough volunteers selling tickets in the park, we can raise quite a bit on this 50/50. Additional information will be announced at the regular meetings, or you can call Lion Bob Virgadamo.

Our Annual Trenton Thunder Baseball Game Outing will be Saturday, August 27^th, between the Thunder (Yankees) and the Binghamton Mets. We have limited seating, on the first base side, but can add tickets if our allotment sells out early enough. It is NOT too early to reserve these tickets. And remember, the tickets are available to all Lions, their families, friends and neighbors. For reservations, contact Lion Bob Virgadamo.

At the last District 16D Cabinet Meeting we learned about the following projects by other Clubs in our Zone: The South Brunswick Lions are having a “Tricky Tray Auction” in April, they’re sponsoring the Cole Bros. Circus on May 21 & 22, and will be holding a Spaghetti Dinner on June 3^rd; for South Brunswick information call Jack Hendrickson at 732-297-1107. The East Brunswick Club will be having a Golf Outing at the Bunker Hill Golf Course on June 1^st; for East Brunswick info, contact Lion Lou Samaro at 732-254-6075. All Cranbury Lions are encouraged to support the activities and projects of other Lions Clubs, especially in our Zone.

There has been a severe drop off in meeting attendance. Members are reminded that our meetings are necessary as a means of disseminating information, obtaining a volunteer corps, and maintain an esprit de corps among our membership. The Board realizes that there are other “time demands”, especially among our younger members, but asks that every effort be made to make the meetings.

Reminders

Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our meetings each month. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding 20 speakers per year that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com . Additionally, Frank will take all members’ suggestions for interactive discussion nights.

The Cranbury Lions Club is in search of new fund raisers – different, entertaining, and fun. Some excellent ideas have been presented, among which are an antique car rally, a Halloween party, a casino night, Bingo, an art auction, a cruise, and a marathon; the Board of Directors would appreciate input from our membership on these ideas. Any member who has a fundraising idea should share the idea with President Walt. The list of potential fundraisers, and the input from interested Lions, will be discussed at a Board of Directors meeting, and presented to the general membership at a regular meeting.

It is important that we increase our fundraising capability without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions Ray Dickey, Dave Shaffer or Bob Virgadamo.

Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members may be notified.
