The Summer Dress Code is in effect during July and August. Members may wear appropriate summer attire to meetings, including shorts.
Fellow Lions, the first September meeting, September 3rd, has been designated Spouse Night, and for everyones enjoyment, Lion Frank Marlowe has gotten Local Master Gardener Norma Swale to come and regale us with useful garden tips for winterizing our gardens. As space is limited, reservations will be needed. Please sign your spouse up on the sheet going around at the August meeting, or contact Lion Bob Virgadamo before August 29.
Beginning September 2003, we will have only one formal speaker per month at one of our regular meetings; generally, we will try to have the speaker at the first monthly meeting. The second meeting will be a series of informal, no pressure discussions, among the members, on a topic that will be chosen at the monthly Board of Directors meeting, and reported here. Possible topics may include hobbies, careers, or any other interesting possibilities. This will be an opportunity for any member to speak about the topic, and for all members to get to know each other better, through these discussions. In view of the diversity that our Club has in age and career categories, this will only help to solidify what is already a strong Club. Lion Frank Marlowe, who has been out Regular Meeting Program Chair for some time, now, has agreed to act as Moderator for the informal discussions.
A laurel and hardy handshake to Lion Christine Thompson, who has volunteered to Chair the Coupon Collection Project for the Club and to Lorraine Sedor who is coordinating the Scouting effort on this project. Remember that this very worthwhile project will cost each of us a mere 10-15 minutes each Sunday morning. As explained before, this project has been organized by a South Jersey Lions Club, through the military and the National Manufacturers Coupon organization. All manufacturers coupons are being collected and sent to APOs and FPOs worldwide, for use in Commissaries by military families overseas who dont have the benefit of coupon supplements in the Sunday paper. The coupons can be expired up to six months. We appeal to all Lions to (neatly) clip every manufacturers coupon from the Sunday paper, put them in an envelope and either bring them to the meetings, drop them at Lion Chriss house, or place them in the boxes that have been provided by the Scouts in the Town Hall and the Library. Lets remember that We Serve, and who better to serve than those that serve us in the military!
As everyone is aware, the Red Oak that was dedicated at the Beamer Memorial did not fare well during last summers drought not this past winters extreme conditions. A new tree has been donated, thanks to Cranbury residents Patty and Matt Long. However, the tree could not be moved this past Spring due to the unseasonably wet weather, and unfortunately, it has not been able to be relocated to the park this summer due to the extreme heat that began immediately following the rains. The tree is scheduled to be moved as soon as the weather permits.
The 3rd Annual Cranbury Lions Club Picnic was on Saturday, July 26, at the Cranbury Swim Club. Lion Joe Carroll chaired this event and reports that a great time was had by all who attended.
Last Call! If anyone else is planning on going to the USA/Canada Forum, please contact Lion Bob Virgadamo ASAP for reservation information.
If you have tickets to the 4th Annual Trenton Thunder Baseball Outing, dont forget that it will be on Saturday, August 23rd, at 7:05 PM, and is between the Thunder (NY Yankees) and the Binghamton Mets. If you have not picked up your tickets yet, please call Lion Bob to make pick up arrangements, either at his home or at our August 20 meeting.
Thanks to a request from the Cranbury Parks Department, under the leadership of President Ray and a committee comprised of Lions Joe Addonizio, Joe Carroll, and Mike Kaiser, a new fundraiser has begun. The Club sold ice cream, popcorn and cold beverages from our ice cream cart during the Parks Departments Movie after Dark Program this summer. President Ray has suggested the Club can also do this during the February doldrums, by hosting a movie in the school gym. Excellent idea.
Our Club Tail Twister,
Lion Joe Carroll, has run a fishing excursion at work for a couple of years, and has
suggested this as a new, and additional, Club Outing for Lions, their families and
friends. Using this as a poll, any Lion who might be interested in such a fishing trip,
should contact Joe, via e-mail at jcarroll@ariproducts.com,
or by phone at (609)
409-9682, and provide him with youre comments, including your preference for a time
slot during the summer or early fall
Reminders
Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our bi-monthly meetings. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding a years supply of speakers that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com .
It is important that we increase our fundraising capability without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions Gene Buckley, Dave Shaffer or Bob Virgadamo.
Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a members family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Dave Cook to activate the phone tree, so that all members may be notified.
Dont forget about our new Eyeglass Collection Box, at its new location in front of the Library.

Fellow Lions, usually, by this time, we have always had a full roster of volunteers to pick up our Members who are unable to drive. For some inexplicable reason, we are severely lacking in pick-up volunteers. We urge you to review the pick up list at the next meeting, and sign up to help our members get to the meetings. Or, if you cant make the summer schedule, please call Lion Rick to get on the list. Reminder: We Serve.
Please remember that Lion Max needs to be picked up in a full sized sedan, or equivalent. All questions concerning the Pick up for Lion Max should be directed to Lion Rick Cusworth (655-2426). If you cannot make your pick-up, and/or if you switch (or need to switch) with someone else, please notify Lion Rick as soon as possible. Riders: please notify the assigned driver if you are unable to make a meeting.
