A Thank You

Lion Bob Virgadamo, on behalf of his Spouse and Partner, Mary Ellen Larson, would like to thank the Club for the lovely floral arrangement received during Mary Ellen’s third hospital stay and for all the cards and well wishes received over the last few months.

Things To Know

Even though we have begun sending a revised “Calendar of Events” with each dues mailing, we’d like to remind all members to please, share the Jargon with your Spouse, so that our events may be better scheduled on your personal, or family, calendars for better attendance. Please Note that Spouses are invited to attend all meetings, but are wholly encouraged to attend “Spouse Night” meetings.

Please Note: Due to New Year’s Day falling on “that particular Tuesday”, the January Board Meeting will be held on January 15, or the Tuesday before the second meeting, in the Tom Gambino Room in the Library.

For the seventh year in a row, the Club will act as a collector for the US Marines’ Toys For Tots Program. We will have collection points at the Branches of the 1^st Constitution Bank, the Post Office, and BBL, Inc, (Unfortunately we lost a couple of collection points this year). If anyone knows of a company who would like to participate in the worthwhile program, or your company would like to participate in the program, please contact Lion Bob V, ASAP. The last day for toy collection will be Thursday, December 20.

Well it seems the Breakfast Meeting at Teddy’s on November 21 was a great success. Many of the 20+ members were “Teddy’s Regulars”, but a few Members were “new” to breakfast at Teddy’s, and many said they would like to do this again. One of the reasons for having breakfast was the Challenge to Change, and use a different venue, as a well as a different time; the other reason was to thank Teddy for all his years of support…then he refused to take our money and donated the tab to the Club. We’d like to thank him and say that if we wind up doing this twice a year, we won’t expect that kind of generosity in the future.

The 60^th Annual Pancake Breakfast was held in the School Cafeteria on Sunday, December 2. Pancake Breakfast Chair Jerry Hanson and his crew did an absolutely fantastic job this year, serving 433 breakfasts and, with the Santa Photos and the 50/50, raising over $3000! A Laurel and Hardy handshake to Lion Jim Gerberich for providing Pictures with Santa, and let’s not forget a giant Attaboy to our Santa, Lion Richard Stannard and his Pointy-Eared Elf Lion Dave Stout, and all the other elves who helped with the assorted projects that day.

Thanks also to Lions Rick Burke & Peter Turner who worked as co-chairs for the Holiday Poinsettia Sale. And Speaking of flowers, Lion Mike Kaiser will not be available to run the Valentine’s Day Roses Sale, and unless someone steps forward to Chair this fundraiser, we will not be selling roses this Valentine’s Day.

This year’s Cranbury Lions Holiday Party will be held one week earlier than usual, on Friday, December 7, 2007, at Charlie Brown’s Restaurant in Kingston (due to the unexpected winter closing of the Bog). The price is $36 per person (members will receive a credit). The Hightstown Club will not be joining us this year. If you haven’t already reserved your seat, please contact Lion Bob V. or President Mike ASAP.

Once again, thanks to the cooperation of the Cranbury School and the perseverance of Mrs. Tamara Woronczuk, the Art Teacher, we had a great turnout for Peace Poster entries. This year’s subject was “Peace Around the World; Lions Don Joe Swanagan and Bob V. judged the nearly 30 posters on November 16, and came up with the following winners: First Place – Haley DeSimone, Second Place – Angela Cao, Third Place – Kate Sohn; Runners up were Madi Andres, Elizabeth Jacobi, and Emma Laurash. Due to the necessary date change required to accommodate our Holiday Party, we have had to move the Annual Peace Poster Meeting, which, for this year only, will be our second meeting in December, on Wednesday, December 19, 2007. Awards will be presented and the Peace Posters will be displayed at that meeting.

Governor Bob has arranged for District 16-D to take part in the District 16-C Mid-Winter Get-Away in Lancaster, PA. No Lions business will be conducted this weekend! This family-oriented weekend will be at the Eden Resort Inn; Friday, 2/1 through Sunday, 2/3; $200, single or double (slightly higher for triple and quads (suites available). A separate Meal and Entertainment Package is being offered as a separate charge. If you want the Package, add $102 per person; it includes Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, Saturday Dinner Theater Tickets, and Sunday breakfast (or brunch, add $17 per person); there will be a hospitality room both days/nights. In addition to the “planned activities”, everyone should know that Lancaster has an excellent First Friday Program, where a dozen or so Art Galleries are open to the public, and provide, musicians, wine, snacks, etc; the City Farmers Market (Amish) will be open on Saturday from 6AM to 2PM; there are guided or self-guided local tours of Amish Country; and the Lancaster area is home to some great Outlet Shopping. Anyone interested in going on the Mid-Winter Getaway must provide their RSVP to Governor Bob no later than December 10.

There is a lot of excitement over the new home of the New Jersey Devils, the Prudential Center Arena near Penn Station in downtown Newark. And, beginning this year, Lion Joe Carroll is the State Chair for the New Jersey Lions Hockey Night at the New Jersey Devils. The game will be Saturday, February 9^th, 2008 at 7:00 PM. The Devils will be hosting the Carolina Hurricanes. According to hockey fans this should be an exciting game. We are getting $65 face value balcony seats for $45. If you can go on-line, look for the “Light Blue” seating sections: 101-107, 116-124, 133-134 in the on-line seating chart. Depending on how many tickets are sold, overall, the clubs will receive between $5 and $17 per ticket as a donation back to the Club. A sign-up sheet will begin circulating shortly, or you can contact Lion Joe to order tickets for yourself, your family, your business or any group.

The Club Wine Project at the Grape Escape is on hold until the Racking Process takes place, probably sometime in March. President Mike advises that there is still at least one case available; members may purchase a case of wine or split a case with another member at a cost of $110 per case (12 bottle cases, less than $10 per bottle); if you are interested in purchasing (or splitting) a case, please speak with President Mike, or DG Bob.

The Board is looking for a Member who can work as “Advertising Chair” and direct a committee to call existing boosters and/or obtain new advertisers for our placemat, Jargon and the website. If you can provide this valuable service to the Club, please contact Lion Rick Burke.

It has been recommended that a member of the Club be totally familiar with the Lions Clubs International Insurance Policy, which covers us under its umbrella, and be available to inspect our event sites and complete a form as it may apply to any particular event or fundraiser, as the new Club “Safety Officer”. Anyone interested in this position should contact President Mike.

The 30^th Annual Lions Day at the UN is Friday, March 14, 2008. The relationship between Lions Clubs International and the UN began in 1945, when Lions founder Melvin Jones and other Past International Presidents were asked to help develop the non-governmental organization (NGO) charter for the new global organization. At the time, Lions Clubs International was already an established worldwide service organization. During the ensuing years, the two organizations have cooperated on many humanitarian ventures. Lions have provided aid and manpower for UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), and UNESCO projects. From the beginning, the relationship between LCI and the UN has been limited to humanitarian endeavors. In keeping with its stated purposes, Lions Clubs International has no involvement in the political or security affairs of the UN. Reservations for the day MUST be made; there are two price points (one with lunch with the UN Ambassadors, and one without lunch). This will be the LAST time tours of the present UN Headquarters Building will be available for the next 6-7 years while renovations are being performed. Membership – Membership – Membership

This month, we are losing three members. We must begin a proactive campaign to bring in new Members! This year’s theme from International President Mahendra Amarasuriya is “the Challenge To Change”, and how, through change, we can increase Membership while rejuvenating existing members to help to keep the Club young, active, and viable! Cranbury Lions Club President Mike has adopted this theme, and is asking ALL members to assist Jon Goldstein, our new Membership Chair, in attracting and bringing in new members. With so many new homes in Cranbury, there are many opportunities for new members. For more information about Family Membership, or membership in general, or to obtain membership applications contact Membership Chair Jon Goldstein, Secretary George Smith, or President Mike. Let’s try to keep our Lions Club from being Cranbury’s “best kept secret”.

…And Attendance…

On the flip side of the membership coin, we also seem to be having a problem with attendance. Using the tag-line, “If you build it, they will come”, President Mike is asking EVERY Cranbury Lion to provide suggestions on how we might be able to CHANGE the meetings to appeal to broader range of the membership, in an effort to build a stronger Cranbury Lions Club. Please provide your suggestions to him directly.
