Speaker: Bart Jackson

Topic: Mr. Jackson will show slides and speak to us about his recent trip to Argentina. He has

spoken to us before about his travels to Rhodesia and the Galapagos Islands, both of which were

fascinating, educational and entertaining presentations.

Topic: Mr. Bocklage is a Past Council Chair for MD16, and the current Secretary/Treasurer for

District 16D. MD16 has 3 candidates up for the position if International Director; he will talk about

the role and duties of an International Director and explain the process of electing the candidate at the

State Convention

Things To Know

Welcome to our newest member, Dean Koehler.

As we have all come to learn, the devastation caused by the tsunami in Southeast Asia is the worst disaster in history. The Board of Directors appropriated $2000 from our Disaster Relief Fund, and the amount was approved by a unanimous vote of the General Membership at the January 5^th meeting. This donation has been forwarded to LCIF, which has already mounted a relief effort in Southeast Asia. LCIF has pledged $5 Million toward the relief efforts to help with this tragedy; at this writing, LCIF has already spent over $820,000.

It would seem that no one has any suggestions for topics for future Interactive Member Discussions; we will resume our guest speaker program until such time as additional discussion topics can be identified. All Members are asked to suggest discussion topics to President Walt, or Program Chair, Lion Frank Marlowe.

The 16-D Charity Ball will be held on March 5^th. This is the only fund raiser for the general fund of the 16-D Eye and Ear Foundation. It is important that this affair is financially successful, and to this end, the Board of Directors of the Cranbury Lions would like to be able to reserve at least two tables of ten for this worthwhile fundraising Dinner Dance. This year’s Charity Ball will be at McAteer’s Restaurant on Easton Avenue in Somerset. Tickets are $35 per person and include hors d’oeuvres for one hour, starting at 7PM, followed by dinner and dancing until 11 pm. Dinner selections are prime rib of beef, Chicken Francaise or broiled flounder. There will be a cash bar. Black Tie, optional. Reservations can be made by sign up sheet at the regular meetings or by contacting President Walt.

As an adjunct to the Charity Ball, the organizers are planning a large raffle and have asked all member Lions to look around the house for new items for which you have no use and donate them for the Charity Ball Raffle. Sounds like a better idea than “re-gifting”. Anyone who can donate an item should contact President Walt or Lion Bob V.

Due to scheduling conflicts and a general lack of enthusiasm, the sports outings for the Princeton hockey and/or basketball games, that were being planned, have been cancelled.

Because Lions International helped to write the UN Charter, there has always been a Lions Day at the United Nations; this year, it is Friday, March 11, 2005. If you are retired, or can get away for the day, bring the family to the UN. It is always a truly interesting experience, especially for the first 350 registrants, who are invited to attend a Council Session. At this writing there are still reservations available at the Council Session. Any Lion who wishes to attend should contact President Walt or Regional Chairman Tom Reilly.

The Lion of the Year Dinner will be held on April 27, as a Joint Meeting with the other Clubs in our Zone: East Brunswick, Milltown, South Brunswick and Spotswood/Monroe. This year, in addition to the Lion of the Year, we will be awarding three Melvin Jones Fellowships; all Cranbury Lions, and their spouses, are strongly urged to attend. One of these prestigious awards could go to you. The LOTY awards dinner will be held at the East Brunswick Chateau; menu choices are Roast Beef, Chicken Francaise, or Broiled Tilapia. The cost is $20 per person. There will be a cash bar.

Thanks to the efforts of President Walt, and Hightstown Lions President Paul Cousineau, our annual Cranbury/Hightstown joint meeting has been set for May 25, 2005, at the Masonic Lodge (downstairs) in Hightstown. Historically, we have alternated hosting duties, and this year it is the Hightstown’s turn to host us, so we are on their schedule (2^nd & 4^th Wednesday). As in the past, the joint meeting will use the interactive discussion format; at this time, the suggested topic will be, “How can our two Clubs be more communicative at both the Club and the District levels.” As the date approaches, a sign-up sheet will be circulated at our meeting. All Cranbury Lions are encouraged to attend.

In addition to this our Annual Joint Meeting, the Hightstown Lions Club have asked if they may join us for our Holiday Meeting/Party; the Board of Directors can see no reason why we cannot enjoy the company of other Lions at our Holiday Dinner Dance and have extended an invitation to the Hightstown Club to join us at the Bog in December.

Lion Doug Pearce, the Chairperson of the Golf Committee, has announced that the Cranbury Lions’ Seventh Annual Golf Outing will be at the Peddie Golf Course on Monday, May 16, 2005. Additional Information will be available shortly.

We have received our dates for our annual Trenton Thunder Baseball fundraiser and Club Outing:

We were, once again, lucky enough to get a game to hold a 50/50 fundraiser. While it may be a bit early for us to ask for volunteers for this fundraiser, we hope that many of you will consider coming to Riverside Stadium to help sell 50/50 tickets. The more ticket sellers we have, the more tickets we can sell; Cranbury Lions may bring anyone over 18 to sell tickets. Entry into the stadium is free; the Club provides each ticket seller with a hot dog and a beverage; and, while you raise money for the community, you get to watch a baseball game. For your information, we have been given a Friday night game (7:05) between the Thunder and the Reading Phillies, on June 24, 2005. This is a good “rivalry” game, and with enough volunteers selling tickets in the park, we can raise quite a bit on this 50/50. Additional information will be announced at the regular meetings, or you can call Lion Bob Virgadamo.

Our Annual Trenton Thunder Outing will be Saturday, August 27^th, between the Thunder (Yankees) and the Binghamton Mets. We have limited seating, on the first base side, but can add tickets if our allotment sells out early enough. It is NOT too early to reserve these tickets. And remember, the tickets are available to all Lions, their families, friends and neighbors. For reservations, contact Lion Bob Virgadamo

At the last District 16D Cabinet Meeting we learned about the following projects by other Clubs in our Zone. The Milltown Lions will be having a Pancake Breakfast on March 20; the South Brunswick Lions are having a “Tricky Tray Auction” in April, they’re sponsoring the Cole Bros. Circus on May 21 & 22, and will be holding a Spaghetti Dinner on June 3^rd. All Cranbury Lions are encouraged to support the activities and projects of other Lions Clubs, especially in our Zone.

The Cranbury Lions Club is in search of new fund raisers – different, entertaining, and fun. Some excellent ideas have been presented, among which are an antique car rally, a Halloween party, a casino night, Bingo, an art auction, and a cruise; the Board of Directors would appreciate input from our membership on these ideas. Any member who has a fundraising idea should share the idea with President Walt. The list of potential fundraisers, and the input from interested Lions, will be discussed at a Board of Directors meeting, and presented to the general membership at a regular meeting.

This year’s White Cane Days will be held in April. All members will be required to collect for the White Cane, and a sheet with your assignment location and time will be distributed next month. Any member who needs to switch a time or day, or have a legitimate reason for not being able to participate should please contact either of the Committee Co-Chairs, Lions Mahlon Thompson or Andre Mento, or President Walt, as soon as the list is released.

There has been a severe drop off in meeting attendance. Members are reminded that our meetings are necessary as a means of disseminating information, obtaining a volunteer corps, and maintain a corps d’esprit among our membership. The Board realizes that there are other “time demands”, especially among our younger members, but asks that every effort be made to make the meetings.

Reminders

Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our meetings each month. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding 20 speakers per year that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com . Additionally, Frank will take all members’ suggestions for interactive discussion nights.

It is important that we increase our fundraising capability without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions Ray Dickey, Dave Shaffer or Bob Virgadamo.

Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members may be notified.
