Lion Mason Blaich
was a member of the Cranbury Lions for 28 years, he was the Chairman for the
Peace Poster Contest, since the inception of the program, and was a Board
member for nearly 20 years, 10 of those as Secretary of the Club. Lion Mason
passed on December 7th, and a Lion Memorial service was held on
Lion Arthur Hasselbach, Sr. passed away at
For a quarter of a century and more, these Lions supported this Club in more ways than can be counted, and in doing so served the community on a myriad of levels. They will be missed by all.
Happy New Year!
The Interactive Member Discussion Topic for March is scheduled to be “Experiences With Anyone Famous”. If you have spoken with, drank with, partied with, or just plain bumped into any famous person, we would like to hear your experience. 2-5 minutes per member should do it.
For the first time in our history, The Cranbury Lions Annual Pancake Breakfast, which was scheduled for Sunday, December 7, was cancelled due to the snowstorm. It was held on Sunday, December 14, and in spite of the normal conflicts caused through date rescheduling, and a second storm, the Pancake Breakfast was a fundraising success. Of course, we had Santa, and photos by Lion Jim Gerberich, another successful fundraiser, thanks to Lion Jim – and, of course Lion Roy Reinhardt, one of the best Santa’s since Monty Wooly. The 50/50 was drawn by young Mr. Brendan Hanson, and was won this year, amazingly enough, by Lion Bob Virgadamo. In addition to the Santa Photos and the 50/50, we have added the sale of Entertainment Books, and seem to be doing fairly well with these. If anyone would like to purchase an Entertainment Book, please contact Lion Joe Addonizio.
We only had two weeks to collect for the Toys for Tots Drive, but in that time, the people of Cranbury donated more than 300 toys and $70 in cash. The Cranbury Lions added an additional $100 donation to the drive, The Marines picked up the donations on December 12, and presented the Club with a certificate of appreciation. It will be on display at the first meeting in January.
NJ Multiple District 16 sponsored the Second Annual Lions Night Hockey Game at the Continental Arena in the Meadowlands, this one between the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers, on Friday, December 12, 2003. This year we had 62 tickets, in large part through the efforts of Lion Joe Carroll. These tickets will net a $310 donation to the Club.
The Holiday Decoration Committee drove around town on Thursday, December 18. And the addresses of the winners are…16 Shady Brook, 49 Petty Rd, 54 Petty Rd, 120 Plainsboro Rd, 127 Plainsboro Rd, 9 Parkview Dr, 8 Washington Dr, 14 Scottsdale Ct, 97 North Main St, 20 Evans Dr, 40 Station Rd, 15 Stockton Dr, 15 Stockton Dr, 3 Macknight Ct, 11 Bergen Dr, 12 Chamberlin Ct, 24 Maplewood Ave, 17 Griggs Rd, 5 Silvers La, 9 Silvers La, 20 Silvers La, 122 North Main St, and the following businesses: Village Haircutters, Law Offices Of Frank Brennan, Cranbury Gift Shop, and Pat’s Décor. As in past years, winners received a poinsettia, and will be listed in the Cranbury Press. Our thanks to Lions Don Jo Swanagan, Mahlon Thompson and Frank Marlowe and the rest of their Committee.
The Cranbury Lions Holiday Meeting and Dinner Dance was at the Bog Restaurant on Friday, December 19, 2003. It would appear that our new DJ – Rich Kaufman – did a more than satisfactory job of providing the right mix of music for our diverse group. Lion Bob Virgadamo would appreciate hearing any comments on this new DJ, from those that attended the party. The dinner cost $25 per person, including music; attending Lions will be billed in their next dues invoice.
At the Holiday Party, the Board of Directors was honored to present five Melvin Jones Fellowship Awards to Lions Mike Kaiser, Dave Shaffer, Dave Stout, Bob Virgadamo and Bob Wood. The Melvin Jones Fellowship is the foundation's highest honor and represents humanitarian qualities such as generosity, compassion, and concern for the less fortunate. Congratulations to these five well-deserving Lions, and thanks for your efforts, your constant energies and your example by doing to remind us all that “We Serve”.
And speaking of serving… the Cranbury Lions presented a special Award to Lion Wayne Stahl for his 65 years of service to the Club and the Community. Unfortunately, Lion Wayne and his wife, Ethel, could not be at the Holiday Party, so President Ray awarded the plaque ‘in absentia’, and Lion Rick Cusworth, delivered the plaque, together with a dozen roses for Ethel, to their home the next day.
The Coupon Collection Project is in full swing! Please deliver your cut manufacturer’s coupons to Lion Chris Thompson at the meetings (or to Lion Bob Virgadamo, if Chris is unavailable), or drop them off to one of the collection boxes in the Library or the Town Hall. Remember that this very worthwhile project will cost each of us a mere 10-15 minutes per week. And, let us not forget that these coupons are being collected to help military families overseas and that “We Serve”.
We have now received dates for our annual visits to the
Trenton Thunder. The Thunder have, once again, granted us a spot on their 50/50
calendar. The game is Thunder v. Mets on
The Board of Directors is still working with the School Board to obtain a location for a display case for the Club’s historic memorabilia. When the display case is finally installed, the Board has voted to dedicate it to the memory of Lion Mason Blaich, who stored the historic items in his home for nearly a quarter of a century.
Reminders
Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our bi-monthly meetings. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding more than a dozen speakers per year that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com . Additionally, Frank will take all members’ suggestions for interactive discussion nights.
It is important that we increase our fundraising capability
without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With
over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the
easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to
bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions
Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members may be notified.
