Things To Know

Reminder: the Dress Code for Regular meetings has been relaxed during July and August. Appropriate summer casual clothing, including shorts, may be worn to the meetings. Normal dress code will resume in September.

Our Annual Trenton Thunder Baseball Game Outing will be Saturday, August 27^th, between the Thunder (Yankees) and the Binghamton Mets. We have limited seating, on the first base side, and reservations MUST be received by July 26. The tickets are $10 each and are available to all Lions, their families, friends and neighbors. Hold the date for the Cranbury Lions 75^th Anniversary Celebration – Saturday, June 23, 2007. A committee is being formed for this historic event; the Co-Chairs are Lions Andre Mento and Bob Virgadamo; sub-chairs are being sought for a myriad of committees, including advertising, promotions, marketing, donations, printing, ticket sales, etc. All interested Lions should contact either Andre or Bob. There will be an open discussion about the Anniversary Celebration at the July Meeting.

Immediate Past President Walt passed the gavel to President Alex Johnson as the Officers and Directors for the 2005-2006 Lion Year were introduced at the Installation Dinner Dance/Meeting at Good Time Charlie’s Restaurant on Friday, June 17, 2005. Congratulations and best wishes to President Alex and his Cabinet.

The Cranbury Lions Barn Project has hit yet another snag; due to the delays we have experienced from the Township over the last two years in turning the project over to us, the larger of the three barns – and the one we considered as our “main” restoration project – has deteriorated to such a degree that the Board has re-thought the project and is awaiting new documents from the Town. Project Chairman Lion Mike Kaiser continues to meet with the Township, and hopefully negotiations are nearly complete for the buildings to be placed into the Club’s care through a “long-term lease” situation. Barring any further delays, we may still be able to proceed this summer or early fall with the restoration of the two more historic barns on the property. Lion Mike expects that work on the project can begin shortly after the documents are completed. More information will follow.

District Governor Eddie Hui has asked that we commend the Lions who volunteered to help out at the Special Olympics on June 3 – 5, at the College of New Jersey. So would you all give a giant Attaboy to Lions Rick Burke, Walt Caldwell, Jeff Grundy, John Kobland, and Tom Reilly for going out to assist with this worthwhile project.

Our Annual Trenton Thunder 50/50, was held during the game on Friday evening, June 24. It was a beautiful evening, it was a sold out game, and we had some great volunteers. A laurel and hardy handshake to Lions Rick Burke, Jeff Grundy, John Kobland, Tom Reilly, Dave Shaffer, Ken Smith, and Bob Virgadamo, as well as non-Lion volunteers Donna Grundy and Mary Ellen Larson, with special thanks to Greg and Renate Overstreet who were in town for the weekend. Through the efforts of these Lions and non-Lions, we raised $630.

The Cranbury Swim Club could not accommodate us for our Annual Club Picnic this year, so Picnic Committee Chair, Joe Carroll and his wife, the lovely Suzanne, have invited the members of the Club, and their families (and those prospective Lions) to have the Lions Picnic at their home in Cranbury Green. The event is planned for Saturday, July 30^th, from 6PM to 10PM. RSVP to Lion Joe at jcarroll@ariproducts.com. As in the past, burgers, dogs, salad, soda and coffee will be served, and the cost will be minimal to cover the cost of food. We ask that each family bring a dessert to share, as well as your “choice of beverage”. Members please contact Lion Joe to sign-up for set up, BBQ duty, games, and clean-up.

There has been a severe drop off in meeting attendance. Members are reminded that our meetings are necessary as a means of disseminating information, obtaining a volunteer corps, and maintaining an esprit de corps among our membership. The Board realizes that there are other “time demands”, especially among our younger members, but asks that every effort be made to make the meetings.

Reminders

Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our meetings each month. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding 20 speakers per year that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com . Additionally, Frank will take all members’ suggestions for interactive discussion nights.

The Cranbury Lions Club is in search of new fund raisers – different, entertaining, and fun. Some excellent ideas have been presented, among which are an antique car rally, a Halloween party, a casino night, Bingo, an art auction, a cruise, and a marathon; the Board of Directors would appreciate input from our membership on these ideas. Any member who has a fundraising idea should share the idea with President Walt. The list of potential fundraisers, and the input from interested Lions, will be discussed at a Board of Directors meeting, and presented to the general membership at a regular meeting.

It is important that we increase our fundraising capability without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions Ray Dickey, Dave Shaffer or Bob Virgadamo.

Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Frank Marlowe (Chair, H&W) and/or Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members may be notified.
