Things To Know

Even though we have begun sending a revised “Calendar of Events” with each dues mailing, we’d like to remind all members to please, share the Jargon with your Spouse, so that our events may be better scheduled on your personal, or family, calendars for better attendance. Please Note that Spouses are invited to attend all meetings, but are wholly encouraged to attend “Spouse Night” meetings.

This will be the ONLY Jargon for the Summer, and will include events for July and August. As always, reminders will be sent via e-mail, when necessary and appropriate. The next Jargon will be delivered to your “In Box” on September 5; ‘snail mail’ recipients can expect it shortly thereafter.

Summer “dress code” remains in effect through July and August…shorts and appropriate shirts are acceptable (no sleeveless “T”s , please)

Congratulations to Lion Ray Dickey for becoming the Club’s newest Melvin Jones Fellow. Lion Ray has consistently served the community and show a level of humanitarian commitment, quietly and in a low-key fashion, both as a Lion and as a member of the First Aid Squad. If asked to do something for the benefit of others, he will immediately take on the task or project, despite his tendency toward downplaying his roles on his many avenues of service. He has been a member of the Board for 7 years, and was Club President in 2003-04. Among his recent accomplishments, he was instrumental in beginning the process of restoring the barns, and played a big part in helping to make the 75th Anniversary a success. Congratulations, Lion Ray!

International President Mahendra Amarasuriya (Sri Lanka) announced his International Program at the International Convention in Chicago“Challenge to Change”, and President Mike and the Board of Directors are looking for ways to make change in the Club to attract new members, retain existing members and make meetings and projects more up to date. “Watch this space” for future announcements and how we will take on the “Challenge to Change”.

Lion Bob V was inducted at the 90th International Convention in Chicago as District Governor of NJ Multiple District 16-D. Lion Bob is the 4th Cranbury Lion to hold this prestigious office, and thanks the Club for their past, present and future support in this endeavor. Congratulations, Governor Bob!

President Mike Kaiser has advised that the Carriage House is ready for the storage of all our equipment. Any Lion who has any stored items is asked to purchase a watertight plastic storage box, or boxes, as needed, transfer all material to the box and contact either Lion Mike or Lion Bob V to schedule a drop off to the barn.

Lion Joe and Suzanne Carroll will host the Annual Club Picnic at their home again this year; anyone who has attended this event in the past knows what marvelous hosts the Carrolls are and what a great time is had at the picnic. The picnic is open to all Members and their families, as well as any potential members (and families). The Cranbury Lions Club Picnic will be on Saturday, July 21, at One McKnight Court. Food and beverage will be provided, and all families are asked to provide a dessert to share. Cost for the picnic: $12 per person, $5 Children; children under 5 free. Joe will also need a few volunteers for set-up, grilling, games, and clean-up. RSVP directly to Lion Joe at 609-409-9682 or jcarroll@ariproducts.com

Sunday, July 22, 2007 is the District 16D “going Away” Party for Past Council Chair Joe Bocklage at the East Brunswick Chateau. This afternoon event will cost $45 per persona nd includes hors d’ouevres, choice of dinner and a Venetian table. Due to the short time frame, call Lion Debbie Roedel at (732) 297-2051 to see if reservations can still be made.

Our annual Trenton Thunder Baseball Game is planned and ready. It will be Thunder (NY Yankees) v. Binghamton Mets on Saturday, August 25. The game starts at 7:05PM. Tickets are $10 per person. This event is open to ALL Lions, their families and friends, as well as our supporters and ALL residents of Cranbury, their friends and families.  For Tickets, contact Lion Bob V.

President Mike’s Company is preparing a Designer Show House at 103 North Main Street and will be showing the house on weekends during September. All proceeds from the tickets will be donated to the Cranbury Lions Club. Members are needed to volunteer to collect tickets and guide parking at the house during these weekend visits. Please contact President Mike or DG Bob to sign up for this volunteer assignment.

The 75th Anniversary and Gala Celebration took place on Saturday, July 23, and while it may not have had the attendance the Committee would have liked, the donations, therefore, being below expectations, the event still make a handsome profit of over $4000. After a full accounting can be completed, checks will be distributed to the Cranbury First Aid Squad, Cranbury Scouts, Camp Happiness, Camp Marcella, and LCIF for Campaign SightFirst II. The Club would like to thank the Event Co-Chairs Andre Mento and Bob Virgadamo for their efforts in this massive project. But lest we forget, “Attaboys” to all the Sub-Committee Chairs and their committees for making all the pieces work. We hope to see you all again at the century mark!

Membership – Membership – Membership

As always we are looking for new members. New Members help to keep the Club young, active, and viable! This year’s theme from International President Jimmy Ross is ‘Renewal’, and President Rick has adopted this theme. With so many new homes in Cranbury, there are many opportunities for new members. Additionally, there is a new Initiative from LCI called “Family Membership”. For more information about Family Membership, or membership in general, or to obtain membership applications contact Membership Chair Mike Kaiser, Secretary George Smith, or VDG Bob V. Let’s try to keep our Lions Club from being Cranbury’s “best kept secret”.

…And Attendance…

On the flip side of the membership coin, we also seem to be having a problem with attendance. Over the last couple of years meeting attendance has diminished from an average of 45+ members per meeting to an average of plus or minus 25 members, per meeting. Our core volunteers have always come from sign-ups at the meetings, and with meeting attendance down, so are the number of volunteers. While we would love to see “a packed house” at every meeting, it is understandable that many of our Members can’t make every meeting due to the demands and obligations to their jobs and families, however, the Board of Directors is asking every member to try to attend at least one meeting per month.

Reminders

Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for each of our meetings. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding 20 speakers per year that will be of relative interest to all our Members!  We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Lion Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com .

The Cranbury Lions Club is always in search of additional new fund raisers – different, entertaining, and most importantly, fun. Any member who has a FUNdraising idea should share the idea with President Rick, or bring it up at one of the meetings. The list of potential fundraisers, and the input from interested Lions, will be discussed at a Board of Directors meeting, and presented to the general membership at a regular meeting.

While it is important that we increase our fundraising capability, it is equally important that we do it without continually requesting donations from our small community on a too frequent basis. With over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every Member to please try to bring in at least one new advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions John Kobland, Ray Dickey, or Dave Shaffer.

Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Frank Marlowe (Chair, H&W) and/or Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, and/or Lion Bob Virgadamo (e-mail notifications) so that all members may be notified as soon as possible.

Member Pick-Up

Lion Frank Marlowe has volunteered to be the “permanent” back-up driver.
