Welcome to our newest Members, Joe Addonizio, Jeff Caldwell, and Jon Goldstein.
Weve been told that a mans tweed jacket, with a Lions lapel pin on it, has been hanging in the Presbyterian Churchs Fellowship Hall for quite some time. Someone reading this issue of The Jargon owns that jacket, and may want to pick it up.
The tree, which is part of the Cranbury Lions sponsored Todd Beamer Memorial, has been planted in Heritage Park. It is a magnificent Red Oak, located just to the left, beyond the parking area at the Main Street entrance. The stone marker has been donated and will be installed in the near future. Dedication of the Memorial is planned to be on September 14, 2002. Thanks to all the volunteers who are doing the daily filling of the water bags on the tree.
For nearly 60 years the
Cranbury Lions have hosted the Memorial Day Parade, and provided the Town with great
programs each Memorial Day. This year was no different, and wed like to thank Bob
Wood and his Sub-Committee Chairs, Doug Pearce and Richard Stannard (Float Co-Chairs) and
Greg Overstreet (Program Chair) for doing such a great job. Thanks to all our members, we
sold 754 Super 50/50 this year, with a net profit of approximately $3650.00. The winners of this years 50/50 were: First Prize Brad Barlow of Allentown;
Second Prize Lion Rich Pape; and, Third Prize Bob Smith of Ewing.
Our Annual White Cane
Days collection yielded $425.60. Lion Mahlon Thompson was the
high man with $97.00. Due to the fact that our Club has so many activities
during May and June, the Board of Directors has voted to try doing our White Cane Days in
October. The next White Cane will be on October 4 and 5, 2002.
The 4th Annual Cranbury Lions Golf Classic was held at the Cranbury Golf Course on June 3, 2002, and was very successful. We had 25 foursomes, and Lion Walt Caldwell and his Golf Committee obtained enough Hole Sponsors to net a profit of over $6500; the actual number will be announced during the annual Treasurers Report. Thanks again, Walt, for our most profitable fundraiser.
The first honoree of our First Annual Stan Thomas Award is Ben Deangelis. Ben is 17 years old and will be attending Princeton HS next year as a Senior, where he is involved with both sports and academic extracurricular teams or clubs. He is active in his church, and routinely volunteers his time to the Cranbury Fire Company. He is a member of Troop 52 and is currently working on his Eagle Project. Ben has demonstrated, time and again, that he is always willing to help, with enthusiasm and humility with out fanfare or accolade. Just as Stan would have done. On June 5, 2002, we presented Ben with a check in the amount of $250 and had his name installed on a permanent plaque which will be hung in the soon to be completed Community Room.. The Cranbury Lions congratulate Mr. Ben Deangelis on this most honorable accomplishment.
This years Trenton Thunder 50/50 is Thursday, June 6. If anyone wishes to help sell 50/50 tickets at the Thunder Game, please call Lion Bob Virgadamo, no later than Noon Thursday, June 6. Each ticket seller will get free entrance into the Park, and the Club will pick up the cost of a hot dog and a beverage. Ticket sellers do not have to be Lions, but must be over 18. Volunteers need to be at the Park between 5:30 and 6PM on Game Day. It may be of some interest to know that there will be fireworks following this game.
The Slate for next years Officers and Board of Directors was read at the May 15th meeting; the second reading will be at the June 5th meeting. The Nominations are as follows: Bob Virgadamo, President; Andy Jost, 1st VP; Walton Caldwell, 2nd VP; Richard Stannard, 3rd VP; George Smith, Secretary; Dennis Kennedy, Treasurer; Charley Devany, Assistant Treasurer. The Board Positions are: Joe Carroll, Paul Mucciarone, Dave Stout, and Bob Wood 1-Year Directors; Ray Dickey, Don Herr, Alex Johnson, Mike Kaiser 2-Year Directors. Dave Shaffer Information & Technology Chair; Jeff Caldwell Lion Tamer; Greg Overstreet Membership Chair; Ray Dickey Publicity Chair; Tom Gambino Tail Twister; Howard Zogott Tail Twister (Alternate).
The Installation of Officers will be at a Dinner Dance on Friday, June 14, 2002 at Good Time Charlies, in Kingston. Anyone wishing to attend should sign the reservation sheet going around at the meeting, or contact Chairperson Charley Devany.
The Cranbury Lions Second Annual Picnic will be held this year at the Cranbury Pool on Saturday, July 27, 2002, beginning at 5:00PM. This event is open to all Lions, their families and invited guests, but reservations must be made before the event. Additional details will be available shortly. You can reserve a spot using the sign-up sheet going around at meetings or through the Picnic Chairperson, Lion Joe Carroll.
The Cranbury Lions will sponsor our Third Annual Trenton Thunder Game at Riverside Stadium. As always, the entire Town is invited. We have blocked 100 tickets, and can get additional, if we sell out early. The tickets are @$8. The difference from past years is that this year we are only doing seats, rather than the more expensive picnic area. The game date is Saturday, August 10th. Its not too early to reserve your tickets today!
The 2002-03 USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum will be held in Fort Worth, Texas on September 19-21, 2002. Anyone wishing to attend should notify Lion Bob Virgadamo. Remember there is a $25 discount per person for registration before June 30.
