Congratulations with a laurel and hardy handshake to Lion of the Year Walton Caldwell!
The search for a Cranbury youth to travel to France is over. Greg & Renate Overstreet, working with a list of graduates provided by the Cranbury School, selected four finalists that fit the criteria. Essays were submitted and conversational French was tested, after which a committee of Lions selected the finalist. Congratulations to Tara Kelley of Shadow Oaks! Our thanks to the committee, and especially to Renate for sharing her expertise on behalf of the club.
Our Annual White Cane Fundraiser is May 4 & 5. If you have not signed up for a slot, please contact Stan Thomas or Guy Eklund.
Please continue to sell Raffle tickets. Remember the drawing is after the parade on Memorial Day. Additional tickets are available. As you all know, this is one of our major fundraisers, so if you are able to sell more than your allotment of tickets please call George Smith for additional tickets.
Arrangements can still be made for the 8th Annual New Jersey Lions State Convention, being held this year May17-19, at the Sheraton Atlantic City West Hotel. The event is open to all members. A day badge (for exhibits) is $6 per person; costs range from $18 for an individual event, to $95 for the 3-day package. Hotel costs are separate ($90 per night). For more information, contact President Tom Reilly.
The annual Drug Free Fair will be held at the Cranbury School on Saturday, May 19, 2001. As in years past, the Cranbury Lions will have a booth. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at meetings for volunteers to man the booth during the day; anyone who is unable to make a meeting can volunteer by contacting Committee Chairperson Richard Stannard.
The Memorial Day Parade will be on Monday May 28, 2001. A sign-up sheet is going around for volunteers. Parade Committee Chairperson, Bob Wood, needs volunteers to help make the parade float, as well as volunteers to help on parade day. For information or to volunteer, contact Bob Wood
The East Brunswick Lions Club will be having their Annual Golf Outing on May 30, 2001. The fee for this event is $90. Anyone interested in playing in this golf outing should contact Walton Caldwell.
The Third Annual Cranbury Lions Golf Classic will be held on Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Cranbury Golf Club. This is our major annual fundraiser and all members are encouraged to attend. This event is especially suited for entertaining your business friend and associates, as well as friends and neighbors who might be interested in joining the Club. The fee for this event is $125 per person, which will include greens fees, golf cart, lunch, and dinner. The game format will be a 4-man team scramble. There will be a shotgun start at 1PM and a refreshment cart will be around throughout the day. All Lions and their spouses (and guests) who do not play in the Classic are encouraged to join us for dinner; the cost for dinner is $25 per person. Walton Caldwell can use some additional help in obtaining Corporate and Hole Sponsors. Please contact Walt for additional information.
Lions Clubs International is a major sponsor of the Special Olympics and provides all the athletes with an eye screening. This year the screening will be done on June 1-3, 2001, at the College of New Jersey in Ewing Township. Volunteers are needed for help with this very worthy cause. If you can give your time, please call Bob Virgadamo for additional information.
The First Annual Lions Family Picnic will be held in Village Park from 1PM -6PM on Sunday, June 10, 2001. This event is open to all Lions and their guests. Members are encouraged to invite prospective members and their families. Hamburgers, hot dogs, potato & macaroni salads, watermelon and beverages will be provided. There will be a games and activities. The cost is anticipated to be approximately $7.50 per adult and $4 for children age 7-12; children six and under are free. Tickets will be available at and after the May 16th meeting. For tickets see Paul Mucciarone, Andy Jost or Dave Shaffer. It would be very helpful, in the planning process, if everyone could contact Paul Mucciarone, to advise him approximately how many adults and children you expect to bring.
The Cranbury Lions have been chosen to sponsor a Super 50-50 at Waterfront Stadium on Saturday June 16, 2001. Volunteers would need to be at the Stadium by 5:30 PM (one hour pre-game). Last year's 50-50 was one of our biggest fundraisers. We need as many volunteers as we can get to sell tickets at the game. Admission is free and the club will pick up the cost of a hot dog and a beer or soda for each ticket seller. Members may bring someone along, just so long as they are willing to sell tickets and are at least 18-years old. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at the May meetings. For more information contact Bob Virgadamo.
The Second Annual Trenton Thunder Baseball Picnic will be on Sunday, August 12, 2001. This Lions Activity is open to all Cranbury residents, their families and friends. Tickets are $27 per adult/$22 per child and includes admission to the Park, seating in the Picnic Area (3rd Base Side), and, a 90-minute all-you-can-eat buffet starting 30 minutes before game time. The buffet includes soda, BBQ ribs, hamburgers, hotdogs, tossed salad, pasta salad, baked beans, pretzels, potato chips, cookies and assorted melons. Beer can be purchased at the reduced rate of $2.75, per. The picnic area holds 150 people, so put your group together and reserve your seats early. For ticket information call Bob Virgadamo
If you have e-mail capability, but are receiving The Jargon via regular mail, please notify the Editor. If we can send The Jargon out via e-mail, the reduction in postage can save over $300 in our annual operating expenses. Your e-mail address will not be distributed outside of the Club, and will only be used for The Jargon and other necessary Club business. Your participation in this program benefits all of us. Thank you.
Cranbury High School Seniors are now beginning to hear from the colleges of their choice. Members are encouraged to advise these High School Seniors that interest-free education loans are available from the Cranbury Lions Club. For information please contact Dennis Kennedy, our Club Treasurer.
