to “try something different”, and to support Teddy after all these years of him supporting us. There will be no speaker at this “networking” meeting

Things To Know

Even though we have begun sending a revised “Calendar of Events” with each dues mailing, we’d like to remind all members to please, share the Jargon with your Spouse, so that our events may be better scheduled on your personal, or family, calendars for better attendance. Please Note that Spouses are invited to attend all meetings, but are wholly encouraged to attend “Spouse Night” meetings.

Our October White Cane Days were on October 19 & 20, and thanks to the efforts of White Cane Chair, Lion Jeff Grundy and his stalwart team of volunteers, the Cranbury Lions made $549.28 from just shaking a can. The Club would like to thank Lion Jeff and ALL the people who came out to help with this quintessential Lions Fundraiser.

There was an excellent turn-out for the “first unofficial meeting” for the Club Wine Project at the Grape Escape on October 25 to crush the grapes. The Press and Barreling will be on our regular meeting date, November 7; dinner will be catered at this off-site meeting by the Cranbury Station Restaurant. Everyone is invited to attend – bring your spouse for a night of fun! At last count we only had 3 cases of wine left for purchase; members may purchase a case of wine or split a case with another member at a cost of $110 per case (12 bottle cases, less than $10 per bottle); if you are interested in purchasing (or splitting) a case, please speak with President Mike, or DG Bob.

According to the Cranbury Press (in the Capsules Column by Lion Fran and Peggy Brennan),75 years ago, at the first Lions sponsored Halloween Party, over 500 people came, most in costume; 50 years ago, there were over 250 people; 25 years ago there were 111 children; but due to a severe lack of attendance by the children over the past few years, the Children’s Halloween Party was suspended. However, thanks to the efforts of Lion Dave Cook, we combined our resources with the Cranbury PTO for a Pumpkin Carving Contest on Friday, October 26; over 160 people attended, and over 100 pumpkins were carved. And, of course, thanks go to Lions Monty Hagerty, Alex Johnson, Bill Keller, and Rich Pape, who served cider and donuts, and judged the pumpkin carvings; Silver Dollars were awarded as prizes for the “best” three carvings and ten “Honorable Mentions” were also awarded prizes. We also had our annual visit from George the Magician, who wowed the kids with a few illusions. [Unfortunately, due to a calendar mix-up, George, was “short on illusions”, but he promised that next year, he’d do something “spectacular”.]

As a change, and to support Teddy for all the support he has given us over the past 30 years, we will hold a Breakfast Meeting at 7:30 AM at Teddy’s on November 21. There will be no speaker. Members are encouraged to attend to network and socialize with each other, as well as the “regulars” at Teddy’s.

The 60^th Annual Pancake Breakfast will be held in the School Cafeteria on Sunday, December 2, 2007. Pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee and tea will be served from 7AM until 1PM. Pancake Breakfast Chair, Lion Gerry Hanson, and his elfin assistants are working on the necessary arrangements, and will put out a work schedule by or before Thanksgiving. Tickets will be available shortly. In view of the inflationary toll (probably caused by fuel surcharges), the Board voted to increase the cost of a ticket by one dollar to $7; children’s prices will remain the same ($4). All questions with regard to the upcoming work assignments should be directed to Lion Gerry, or to 2VP Lion John Kobland. As in past years, Lion Jim Gerberich will be on hand to provide Pictures with Santa

The Valentine Day Roses Sale has worked so well for the last two years that the Board has discussed and approved a Holiday Poinsettia Sale. Like the Roses, the members of the Committee will market and pre-sell poinsettias by phone and through and on–line ordering address, and the plants can be picked up during the pancake breakfast as a supplement to the fundraiser. The Board would like to thank Lions Rick Burke & Peter Turner who have agreed to work as chairmen for the flower sales. Unfortunately, the Bog has changed its policies and has decided to close for the winter, and since we received this information late, we were unable to get our regular “date” at another location. This year’s Cranbury Lions Holiday Party will be held one week earlier than usual, on Friday, December 7, 2007, at Charlie Brown’s Restaurant in Kingston. The price is $36 per person (members will receive a credit). The Hightstown Club will not be joining us this year. A sign-up sheet is being passed at the next two meetings, or contact Lion Bob V.

Due to the necessary date change required to accommodate the Holiday Party, we have had to move the Annual Peace Poster Meeting, which, for this year only, will be our second meeting in December, on Wednesday, December 19, 2007. The Peace Posters will be displayed at that meeting.

Governor Bob has arranged for District 16-D to take part in the District 16-C Mid-Winter Get-Away in Lancaster, PA. No Lions business will be conducted this weekend! This family-oriented weekend will be at the Eden Resort Inn; Friday, 2/1 through Sunday, 2/3; $200, single or double (slightly higher for triple and quads (suites available). A separate Meal and Entertainment Package is being offered as a separate charge. If you want the Package, add $102 per person; it includes Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, Saturday Dinner Theater Tickets, and Sunday breakfast (or brunch, add $17 per person); there will be a hospitality room both days/nights. In addition to the “planned activities”, everyone should know that Lancaster has an excellent First Friday Program, where a dozen or so Art Galleries are open to the public, and provide, musicians, wine, snacks, etc; the City Farmers Market (Amish) will be open on Saturday from 6AM to 2PM; there are guided or self-guided local tours of Amish Country; and the Lancaster area is home to some great Outlet Shopping. Anyone interested in going on the Mid-Winter Getaway must provide their RSVP to Governor Bob no later than December 10, 2007.

There is a lot of excitement over the new home of the New Jersey Devils, the Prudential Center Arena near Penn Station in downtown Newark. And, beginning this year, Lion Joe Carroll is the State Chair for the New Jersey Lions Hockey Night at the New Jersey Devils. The game will be Saturday, February 9^th, 2008 at 7:00 PM.  The Devils will be hosting the Carolina Hurricanes.  According to hockey fans this should be an exciting game.   Mass transit is recommended for travel to the new arena, and NJ Transit is running additional trains.  The area is heavily patrolled by police. We are getting $65 face value balcony seats for $45.  If you can go on-line, look for the “Light Blue” seating sections: 101-107, 116-124, 133-134 in the on-line seating chart.  Depending on how many tickets are sold, overall, the clubs will receive between $5 and $17 per ticket as a donation back to the Club. A sign-up sheet will begin circulating shortly, or you can contact Lion Joe to order tickets for yourself, your family, your business or any group.

Finally, the Board is looking for a Member who can work as “Advertising Chair” and direct a committee to call existing boosters and/or obtain new advertisers for our placemat, Jargon and the website. If you can provide this valuable service to the Club, please contact Lion Rick Burke

Membership – Membership – Membership

As always we are looking for new members. However, this year’s theme from International President Mahendra Amarasuriya is “the Challenge To Change”, and how, through change, we can increase Membership while rejuvenating existing members to help to keep the Club young, active, and viable! Cranbury Lions Club President Mike has adopted this theme, and is asking ALL members to assist Jon Goldstein, our new Membership Chair, in attracting and bringing in new members. With so many new homes in Cranbury, there are many opportunities for new members. For more information about Family Membership, or membership in general, or to obtain membership applications contact Membership Chair Jon Goldstein, Secretary George Smith, or President Mike. Let’s try to keep our Lions Club from being Cranbury’s “best kept secret”.

…And Attendance…

On the flip side of the membership coin, we also seem to be having a problem with attendance. Using the tag-line, “If you build it, they will come”, President Mike is asking EVERY Cranbury Lion to provide suggestions on how we might be able to CHANGE the meetings to appeal to broader range of the membership, in an effort to build a stronger Cranbury Lions Club. Please provide your suggestions to him directly.
