Of the forty-five possible Seminars, held over two days, eight were attended, and at the next, or next couple of, Interactive meetings, Lion Bob will share with Club the information learned from the seminars, as well as to help explain the points of the Share Success Program.
Our Interactive Member Discussion Topic scheduled for October
20th will be a discussion of some of the seminar topics from the 2004
USA/Canada Forum, led by Lion
Unfortunately, there was not enough positive commitment from
the Club towards the fishing trip that Lion Joe Carroll put together. Lion Joe
says that the trip did happen and the fish were biting; he says that he will
attempt to pull a fishing trip together again next year. The Club would like to
thank Lion Joe for his efforts.
Cranbury
Day was Saturday, September 11, and thanks to the efforts of Co-Chairs Don Herr
and Dennis Kennedy, and the Lions that helped out this year, the Club raised $2000.
Our Annual Golden Agers Luncheon, held on September 18, was, as always, a smashing success, thanks to the efforts of Co-Chairs Mahlon Thompson and Joe Addonizio, and all the Lions that donated cakes and/or served as hosts at the luncheon. We would like to give a special thanks to Lion wives Bonnie Thompson and Mary Reilly for their help at the luncheon.
The
November 3rd meeting has been designated as our Autumn “Spouse
Night”. Mr. Avo Simonson, our Guest Speaker, will tell us about the
availability of cruises, and the different ships and Ports of Call. Please
advise Lion
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – The Club needs a Chairman and Co-Chairman for
the Spring Raffle; we also need to know who will be interested in holding a can
for the White Cane Days. All interested members, should please contact
President Walt, ASAP.
Editorial
A number of items were mentioned at the last meeting, and because it was inferred that there are serious concerns from the membership, but especially by the experienced, long-time Lions, these items need to be addressed and clarified.
The first, and most important, being that the Board of Directors is “running” the Club without any say from the Membership. Fellow Lions, our Board of Directors has eighteen available positions, which should provide a diverse enough group to be able to work towards the wishes of each and every member. I have been a member of this Club for 7 years, on the Board for six and President for two, and have seen how the Board operates under six Presidents. Each of these Presidents have led the Board and reported to the Club, using their own individual styles, but without deviation, in accordance with the By-Laws of the Cranbury Lions. At the first meeting of every month, each of these Presidents have paraphrased the topics covered during the Board of Directors Meeting of the previous evening; each of these Presidents have asked the members present, at each of these first monthly meetings, if there was agreement or disagreement, suggestions, or just general comments about the covered topics, and, through these last seven years, with perhaps one or two exceptions, not one hand has gone up; not one comment has been made. Fellow Lions, one of the legal definitions of silence is acceptance; if you don’t disagree, then you agree.
The Cranbury Lions Club is every Member’s Club – and every Member has a say in it’s operation and governance. But, as previously stated, there are eighteen positions on the Board, and for this Lion year (2004-2005), the slate was passed around and a call for volunteers continued for six weeks (and in two issues of The Jargon); the Club, through the Board, was only able to fill sixteen of the eighteen positions. Our Club currently has 76 Members, of which 24, or more than 30%, have been Lions for fifteen years or more. One of these experienced, long-time Lions is a member of the Board. At 30% representation, we should have at least 5 long-time Lions on the Board of Directors.
Every Member of the Cranbury Lions is free to attend the monthly Board meeting. Every member of the Cranbury Lions is free to request a printed copy of the Minutes of the Board Meetings, when each one becomes available. It was stated at the last meeting that the Board Meeting Minutes “used to be read at the Business (Regular) meetings after every Board Meeting”. To the best of nearly everyone’s recollection, this procedure was done for less than one full year, in 1979. It is impractical, and unfair to ask the Secretary to complete these minutes within 24 hours, especially when all the members have to do is listen to what is being said from the podium. If questions arise, ask! If you disagree with an action of the Board, say something!
Additionally, the Jargon is not published until after each month’s Board meeting, and for the last five years, I have tried to include most of the items covered at the Board Meetings within these pages.
Past Boards of Directors have, this Board of Directors has, and future Boards of Directors will always operate based on the needs of the Club and the wishes of it’s members, and always within the parameters of the our By-Laws.
Reminders
Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years
now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our meetings
each month. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding 12 speakers
per year that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone
interesting on a regular basis. When you
do, or if you have any
suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com . Additionally, Frank
will take all members’ suggestions for interactive discussion nights.
It is important that we increase our fundraising capability
without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With
over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the
easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to
bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions
Joe Addonizio,
Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another
member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency,
should contact Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members
may be notified.
